Be careful what you wish for...

In the throes of a mid-life crisis, 40-something father Adam moves his family from the stresses of London life to a remote French farmhouse. Awaiting the arrival of his wife and daughter, Adam endures the idiosyncrasies of an old house with his father, who suffers from dementia, and his son, a victim of bullying.

But when a storm leaves them isolated from the small, rural community, Adam's hope for blissful isolation turns to terror. The house is not what he thought it was, and the longer they spend within its walls, the further things seem to drift from reality.

Earth Incorporated Book I

WELCOME TO LEAFEN!

With our vibrant office centre, magnificent skyline and temperate climate (thanks to a state-of-the-art Fabrik perimeter), you'll soon see why we're one of the most desirable corporations in which to live today. Just ask our colour-coded workforce - 40 million smiles can't be wrong!

**MESSAGE COURTESY OF THE LEAFEN CORPORATION TOURIST BOARD**

Times are changing. There is unrest in the east. The Arctic oil conflict is getting worse. Guerrilla Startups are everywhere. In a world where even The Market (the vast, mysterious AI system worshiped the world over) cannot predict what will happen next, Leafen needs all the friends it can get.

Executive Class Double Red Steve Manager is about to close a deal that will bring his corporation a powerful ally. But something is wrong. The death of an old friend has brought back painful memories that are telling him, for some reason, to stop. April Knight is a limo driver. By day she taxis high-flyers and dignitaries around the corporation she's lived in all her life. But by night she dreams of breaking through Leafen's Fabrik to see what lies beyond The Hordes, and discover the truth about where she comes from. For Blue-Yellow Demetri Trittek things are a little simpler. A third-level programmer with coding in his blood, all he wants is a quiet life; to take his seat and do his job, just like his father.

But when Leafen is attacked by a ruthless defence corporation, its employees find themselves compromised by a mysterious force. Steve, Demetri, and April are about to discover that, in a world where nations are just distant memories and your Colours define you for life, things don't stack up quite the way they once thought.

From the Storm

"We don't know what his name is or where he came from, but he is staying in my room..."

In the near future, a young man seeks adventure in the French Alps. Lost, feverish and caught in a freak snowstorm, he finds refuge in a lonely mountain farm where he stumbles upon a young girl’s diary from eighty years before. Claudette tells of farm life disrupted by a blizzard and the arrival of a stranger with a terrible injury. With her father sick, the eight-year-old chronicles her struggle to look after the farm, and its unwanted guest, alone.

In present-day London, Joseph Martin has screwed up. Once he was a lethal assassin, the best gun-for-hire. Now, in his autumn years, even he admits he is losing it. His failing skills have landed him in trouble with a dangerous client. Only the successful completion of an eerily familiar mission can save his skin; a mission which takes him into deepest Asia, where he must face a past he has long tried to forget.

He’s not the only one on the road in Asia. London city boy Ashley Gritten is travelling. Shedding the challenges of his privileged life in Kensington, he’s off to ‘find himself’ in the drugs, girls and debauchery of the backpacker trail. But something else finds him. Something much, much worse.

Who would have thought a rich kid and an ageing hitman would have so much in common? And what does all of this have to do with Elmo, a pianist on his deathbed in Venice?

A dark and humorous story of how selves are lost and lives are found.

The Human Son

500 YEARS IN THE FUTURE, EARTH IS A PARADISE... WITHOUT US.

The Earth was dying, and only the Erta could save it. Created to be genetically superior, hyper-intelligent and unburdened by human emotions, they succeeded by removing the cause: humans.

Now the Erta are faced with a dilemma—if they reintroduce the rebellious and violent Homo sapiens, all of their work could be undone. They decide to raise one child: a sole human to decide if we should again inherit the Earth.

But the quiet and clinical Ima finds that there is more to raising a human than she had expected, and there is more to humanity’s history than she has been told.

In 2018, indie publisher Storgy launched their Shallow Creek short story competition. Every entrant was given a prompt - and by prompt I mean the most inventive and creative set of documents, maps and character backstories I've ever seen. Every story was to be written in the fictional town of Shallow Creek, an eerie place somewhere between Castle Rock, Maine and Twin Peaks. My character was John Hamilton, a middle-aged sherrif with a background as murky as Shallow Creek itself.

It was great fun to write, and the story made it into the compilation book, which you can buy here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SHALLOW-CREEK-STORGY-BOOKS-ebook/dp/B07PVPW9SD

About Adrian

Adrian J Walker

Adrian J Walker is a critically acclaimed author of dystopian and speculative fiction. His stories are as exciting as they are thought-provoking, exploring the what futures may lie in wait for us, and the fragility of the human condition.

Adrian's writing has been praised by writers (including a certain Mr Stephen King), critics and readers alike for its poetry, pace, and emotional articulacy.

About Adrian

Adrian was born in the bush suburbs of Sydney, Australia, in the mid-1970s to a drama teacher and a postman. While his mother taught the local waifs and strays to walk the boards, his father buzzed about the bush on a motorcycle delivering letters and stuff. According to family folklore, a kangaroo once jumped onto the back of this motorcycle and rode behind his father for some time before hopping off. While there is no evidence of this ever happening, it does go some way to explaining where Adrian found his love of storytelling.

Eventually, the family moved back to the UK, where Adrian was raised in a chaotic series of building sites that occasionally resembled a household.

He and his older sister shared a love of music, though different in style. While she would go on to become a professional classical musician, Adrian squandered his talents on playing guitar and keyboards in bands, one of which is still going strong today.

Pursuing a career in his second passion, software, it was not until his thirties that Adrian wrote his first book, From the Storm, which he self-published. It did quite well. He then went on to write The End of the World Running Club, which was picked up by Penguin Random House and became an international bestseller, featuring on Simon Mayo’s Book Club on BBC Radio 2 and being endorsed by none other than Stephen King.

He has published numerous other novels and short stories since then, all of which can be found on this website. Not quite science fiction, his stories range from the obscure to the dystopian with a unique style that has been praised as much for its poetry as its pace, articulacy, and humour.

Like many authors, Adrian’s writing has not yet been financially successful enough to support itself, and he therefore enjoys a day job as a software engineer in cyber security. If you would like to support Adrian’s work, then you can send him a tip using the button below. He’ll be chuffed if you do.

The internet is terrible.

If you don’t believe me then go to any cookery website, they’re FUCKING INSANE. I tried to find a recipe for profiteroles recently and felt like I’d stumbled into one of those rooms serial killers have full of dolls’ heads and finger jars, except the dolls’ heads were adverts for clogs and the jars were full of cookie popups.

Terrible.

That’s why I keep this site as simple as I possibly can. It’s a single page with no database, no logins and no comments section. I wanted this to be my site, playing by my rules.

And rule #1 is: Absolutely no cookie popups

To achieve this I have to adhere to something called GDPR. This basically means I’m not allowed to secretly store personal information about you as you use the site. So I don’t do this.

What I do is this:

1. Visitor Statistics

To understand how people use this site, I use a service called Mixpanel. Nothing is stored in your browser, so Mixpanel can’t tell if you’ve been here before. Each visit is just a visit, with nothing tying it to your name, email, or any other piece of personal information. It lets me see things like how many people visit, which books they look at, and which buttons they press (like downloading a book…hooray!)

Mixpanel also works out your rough location, but it’s never more granular than the city and country you might happen to be in (e.g. Manchester, England).

2. Newsletter and Books

I use Kit.com to run my newsletter and to sell and deliver my books. When you sign up for the newsletter or buy a book, Kit collects and stores your email address and any other details you give it. Payments are handled by Kit, so I never see your card details.

Please review Kit.com’s privacy policy to learn more about how your data is managed by them.

3. Hosting

This site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare has to see your IP address to send you the page, and to keep out bots and attackers. I don’t keep any records of this.

4. How Your Data Is Stored

I don’t have a database of my own any more. Visitor statistics live with Mixpanel, and newsletter and order details live with Kit. Both are well-established companies with robust security, and I keep my accounts with them locked down.

5. Your Rights

As a user, you have the right to:

  • See any personal data Kit.com holds about you.
  • Ask for that data to be changed or deleted.
  • Stop receiving my emails by unsubscribing at any time.

6. Cookies and Tracking

This site doesn’t set any cookies, and it doesn’t store anything else in your browser either. The only exception is your choice of light or dark mode, which is remembered if you pick one.

If you click to download or buy a book, or to support me, Kit’s checkout opens. That uses cookies of its own, from Kit, from Stripe (who handle the payments) and from hCaptcha (who keep out bots). None of this loads until you click.

7. Changes to This Policy

I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted here, so please check back periodically for updates.

Last updated: October 2026.

If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact me at adrian@adrianjwalker.com

That’s it! Basically I’ve done my best to create a site that’s not frustrating to use while allowing me to understand how it’s being accessed so I can make it better in future. I am absolutely not in the business of data harvesting or sales. You have my word.
